According to Eurostat, the popularity of online education in the EU countries has grown.  Scandinavian countries are leading the way

Eurostat has conducted a survey of EU citizens in the age group from 16 to 74 years. The survey showed that 8% of respondents took online courses in the last three months of 2019.

This is 1% more than in 2017, and twice as much as in 2010, if we compare survey results for the same period.

Maximum number of people has completed online training in the Scandinavian countries. In Finland, 21% of respondents completed online training during this period, and in Sweden - 18%. Slightly lower results were shown by Spain (15%), and Estonia (14%). In Ireland and the Netherlands, 13% of respondents had undergone online training.

Online education enjoyed the least popularity in Bulgaria (2%), Romania (3%) and Latvia (4%).

In terms of face-to-face communication during online learning, there were large differences across different age groups. Thus, 28% of respondents in the age bracket 16 to 24 years said that they interacted with instructors / students, while in the age group between 25 to 64 years, only 7% of respondents did this. Older participants received instructor-led training.
